Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
We have a nine-month-old baby girl. She has five brown marks; two of them are 0.79 inches in size, and the other three are 0.2 inches. They are irregular in shape. Initially, two marks appeared when she was 3 months old, and now, when she is nine months old, three more are added that are comparatively light and 0.2 inches in size.
Are these birthmarks? Will they fade with the time? Do we need to take any precautions so that they do not increase or get added further? Can we also provide any medication to cure them? Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Please send me a photograph of the lesion. On the basis of history, it seems to be cafe lait macules, but I need photographs of the lesion to be sure. Presently, I will not suggest any medications as the baby is small, and I need to be sure. Kindly review with photographs.
Kindly revert back in case of further queries.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I am attaching the pictures. I would also like to know if these are birthmarks. Will they fade with time? Do we need to take any precautions so that they do not increase or get added further? Can you provide any medication to cure them, and at what age can we start the medication?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
I saw the attached photographs (the attachment was removed to protect the patient's identity). The brown color hyperpigmentation is the birthmark only. Nothing to worry about. They will not progress in size and will increase in proportion to height. They will not darken with time. Or they will remain the same color or slightly fade with time. Nothing active is to be done for these lesions, and no tube or medicine will be beneficial. In the future, if the child finds it a cosmetic problem, then they can be treated with laser after the child acquires puberty and there is no more growth.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
Is it the same as what you mentioned earlier, Cafe-au-lait macules? As mentioned earlier, in the initial 3 months, it was two in count, and now we observed three more of them, as you can see in the picture. The new marks are still very small and light, but we are worried about whether the count can increase further. Also, are these new marks the same as the first two marks? Is there an alarm situation if the count increases further or they go darker?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Yes, it is the same Cafe-au-lait macule. They may appear later in life and of light shade and can increase in number until 1 year. Nothing to worry about; it is not alarming or dangerous for the child.
I hope this helps.
Please contact us again if you have further queries.
Thank you.
