What causes a burning sensation at the tip of the penis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am experiencing a minor burning sensation at the tip of my penis glans. It has been a few months since the burning sensation began, but it does not appear to be gone. The burning feeling does not always last throughout the day. Swelling develops at the tip of the glans and fades and reappears. The foreskin likewise sticks to the glans, although it retracts easily. A little bump (pimple) appears around the tip of the glans. It does not heal. I had unprotected sex with my partner for the first time. I underwent a urine culture test, blood sugar test, VDRL, HIV 1 and 2 tests, and my blood test revealed a bacterial infection, which increased my jaundice. I have tried various antibiotics and T-Bact cream, but nothing has helped. I have attached an image. Please review the attached image and suggest something to help me heal.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your query and concern.

Your symptoms and images (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity) do not suggest penile cancer (a disease in which cancer cells form in the tissues of the penis). However, a physical examination is the best way to confirm it. Your problem appears to be an infection of the glans of the penis (tip of the penis). This condition is common in nature and occasionally requires corticosteroid ointment over the glans. If the problem of prepuce skin sticking to the glans penis persists, circumcision surgery is the best choice. I suggest you see a urologist near you and begin corticosteroid cream treatment under the supervision of a local urologist (a physician specializing in diagnosing and treating urinary system diseases). Sometimes, this problem is caused by allergies, such as a condom allergy. Try avoiding condoms and see if the situation improves.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at icliniq.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

Is there any test available to diagnose this problem? Is this balanitis?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It may be balanitis (inflammation of the foreskin and penis head). Unfortunately, there is no test to identify balanitis. Instead, it is diagnosed by a physical examination by a urologist (a physician specializing in diagnosing and treating urinary system diseases).

Hope this answers your query.

Kind regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have recently tested my urine culture, and the culture shows an infection. I have also had penis glans tip swelling sometimes and also burning for eight months. Two days before, I had a urine culture, and it showed a bacterial infection. I have attached my report. Please suggest the best treatment for me.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your urine culture is suggestive of infection. I suggest you start antibiotics. You will need a prescription from a doctor in your country to get the antibiotics. You will be prescribed Cefixime or Levofloxacin medication for five to seven days, and then depending on symptoms urine test may be repeated.

Hope this addresses your query.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks again.

Also, my glans tip had swelling and tenderness, and my urologist prescribed Mupirocin ointment. Why do both urine infection and penis glans problems occur at the same time?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Urine infection can lead to penile tip inflammation. If the swelling is too much and there is burning in urine, then you will also need a course of antibiotics.

Hope this helps. Revert in case of queries.

Regards.
