What could be the reason for increasing bruises in the legs?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25-year-old female, with height of 5'3" and weight of 149 pounds. I have been getting bruising on my legs over the past two weeks for no apparent reason. My veins have become very visible and prominent and have also started bruising. In this time I have noticed roughly a dozen bruises. My legs and feet have also become extremely cold, almost feeling like cold blood running through my veins and I am getting a tingling sensation in them, and last night my big toe went completely numb and is still slightly numb. I am not currently on any medication apart from Iron and Vitamin C supplements. My grandmother has diabetes, and my grandfather has von Willebrand disease, but I do not have a medical history apart from pneumonia and low iron. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You need to rule out the underlying cause for peripheral neuropathy like diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, thyroid issue, calcium deficiency, B12 deficiency, etc. For that color doppler leg, random blood sugar estimation, serum TSH estimation, serum B12 estimation need to be done. Your detailed neurological evaluation also should be done. For bruise problem investigate with, SGPT (serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase), SGOT (serum glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase), serum total protein estimation to rule out liver disease as the underlying cause, PT (prothrombin time), APTT (activated partial thromboplastin time), BT (bleeding time) to rule out any problem in coagulation if present, and CBC (complete blood count) to rule out low platelet count as an underlying problem. You can revert with all these reports once done. You can consult nearby physician for detailed evaluation. I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
