Does reddish brown spotting in a 26-year-old mother suggest a new pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 26-year-old female, and I had a baby girl 14 months ago. I started my cycle again five months postpartum. They have been relatively regular, with cycles between 29 to 33 days but mostly 29 days until my last one. I did not have my period; I just spotted it for 11 days. And last night, it started again, but only when I wiped after going to the toilet. It is primarily brown but can be red and watery. I had my first smear yesterday, so I am waiting for the results. What do you think this could be? I am worried it is something super bad.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

First, check pregnancy status with serum beta hCG ( blood pregnancy test). You will need a scan and detailed evaluation for urgent intervention if it reports positive. In case of a positive pregnancy test, it could be a threatened miscarriage. The probable cause is hormonal or conception.

Have complete treatment for any health issue you have.

Have a balanced diet, weight, and BMI (body mass index).

Strictly observe symptoms and have one detailed examination by a gynecologist's specialist to exclude local pathology.

Follow up with beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) result.

I hope you find it helpful.

Kind regards.
