Do babies lose weight in the initial days after birth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I delivered my son at 36 weeks; his birth weight was 2.53 kg. He was 2.33 kg during discharge. He was given breastfeeding and 15 ml water, 1 scoop of Dexolac special care two times a day for the next 11 days. His weight was 2 kg on the 12th day. He pees three to four times a day and passes yellow running stools every two days. I am worried because he has not gained weight. Breast milk is not sufficient for the baby as he cries after 30 mins or one hour after every feed but sleeps for two to three hours after giving Dexolac. Kindly suggest the quantity of Dexolac special care for feeding. Is there any combination technique for giving both Dexolac special care and breast milk? So, he gains weight and also does not miss the nutrients from the breastmilk. Kindly give your suggestions.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Babies tend to lose around 10 % of the initial weight during the first 10 days and gain weight thereafter. You can give breast milk and Dexolac ( partially skimmed milk, Lactose, Edible oils, Whey and whey solids, Emulsifier< Taurine, antioxidant, L-Carnitine, vitamins, and minerals) alternatively. I suggest you give Dexolac in the ratio of 30: 1; 30 ml water and one scoop powder. Feeding should be done with a spoon and not a bottle. Dexolac can be increased to two scoops of powder with 60 ml of water and so on if the baby needs more. Fortifier powder (protein, carbohydrate, Calcium, Phosphate, other minerals, trace elements, vitamins, and minerals) can also be used. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
