How can I manage HER2+ breast cancer along with my anxiety?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am writing about my recent diagnosis of HER2-positive breast cancer. I have noticed a lump in my breast, swelling, and some discharge from the nipple. My case history includes hypertension, managed with Lisinopril. My blood work shows elevated CA 15-3 levels, and a biopsy confirmed HER2-positive status. I also have anxiety and am taking Sertraline 50 mg daily. My oncologist has suggested a treatment plan that includes Herceptin (Trastuzumab), chemotherapy, and possibly surgery. I am feeling overwhelmed and anxious about this plan.

Could you provide more details on what to expect and any additional steps I should take?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query, and I can understand your concern.

It looks like you have recently been diagnosed with HER2 (human epidermal growth factor receptor 2)-positive breast cancer. In most cases, HER2-positive breast cancer patients will be treated initially with chemotherapy and Trastuzumab (monoclonal antibody). Another drug, Pertuzumab (monoclonal antibody), can be added depending on the stage of cancer.

After completion of six to eight chemotherapy cycles, there will be surgery to remove the breast mass. Further treatment will depend upon the pathology report of the excised tumor. In your case, I do not know the stage and hormone receptor status. With advancements in breast cancer treatment, overall survival and disease-free survival have increased, and most patients survive for many years, depending upon the stage and molecular profile of the tumor.

I hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
