Why am I getting blood while blowing nose?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Over the past five days, I have been experiencing a significant amount of blood in my mucus when I blow my nose. My sinuses are sore and puffy. Today, my right cheek and the right side of my nose have gone numb and tingling.

Kindly help me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

According to the history provided and the image (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) provided, it is a blood-stained discharge with mucus. Hence, the possibility ofacute sinusitis , Von Willebrand disease or rhinitis is present. Your workup should be done as follows.

  • Rhinoscopy nose examination.
  • PNS x-ray (paranasal sinus).
  • CBC (complete blood count) with platelet count.
  • ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate).
  • PT (prothrombin time).
  • APTT (activated partial thromboplastin time) if needed.

If the inner nasal mucosa is swollen and congestion is present, then a decongestant like Phenylephrine is used. If the inflammatory swelling is more, then a short course of steroids can be suggested. According to the cause found on examination, the specific treatment is given.

Consult an otorhinolaryngologist for examination, keeping all this in mind. Take one teaspoon of turmeric powder and honey with milk daily. If excess bleeding occurs from the nose in between, then pinch the nose with the thumb and index finger for 5 to 10 minutes. If bleeding is more from the nose, then the doctor might put nasal packing.

Thank you and take care.
