Do blood tests reports done to diagnose leukemia come within a day?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My five-year-old daughter underwent blood tests today to detect leukemia. My wife was told she would get a phone call today if the results were positive. However, I have read on the internet that it takes two to three weeks for the results to come. Were we given the wrong information, or do the results come in so quickly?

Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Leukemia is diagnosed with three tests:

  • The first is a simple blood test CBC (complete blood count), in which the results come within a few hours.
  • A blood film which takes a few minutes.
  • Bone marrow biopsy is a confirmatory test that gives the results in a few minutes.
  • There are no tests that take a long period.

    I hope this helps.

    Best wishes.
