Can allergies cause blood blisters on my gums?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I keep getting blood blisters on my gums whenever I eat something. I also get them on eating bananas. They disappear after taking an antihistamine and keep reappearing. I do not have any known allergies. Is this an allergic reaction or anything else?

Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome to iclinq.com.

I understand your concern and would be happy to help.

Most blood blisters resolve on their own. Those who do not can be treated with dietary changes and medications. Check the ingredients in your food and avoid those containing acetic acid or citric acid, which are also present in natural foods like oranges and grapefruit.

Additionally, reduce your intake of alcohol and hot beverages. Blood blisters can also form due to stress. I recommend getting a CBC (complete blood count) to check your platelet levels.

If these measures are not effective, consider undergoing a radioallergosorbent test (RAST).

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
