What could cause a thin black line to appear on my nail that was injured a few months ago?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a very thin small black line underneath my nail. I suddenly noticed it a week ago. I first saw it on my right thumb, the same thumb I had a nail injury where I had to get my nail surgically removed back at the start of the year. It healed fully and grew again. I did not have this black spot for the past few months. I have hypothyroidism, and I am taking a tablet of levothyroxine 75 mg. My mother had kidney failure and is undergoing dialysis.

Please help me.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Do not worry, I will help you with your concern. I went through your photos (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity) and history, it looks like a splinter hemorrhage (a few blood stains under the nail, which are brought on by blood vessel injury). Splinter hemorrhage mostly commonly occurs due to trauma or wearing acrylic nails. Other causes can be an infection or any medicines etc. Do you wear acrylic nails? If it is due to trauma or wearing artificial nails, then nothing to worry about. It will heal automatically.

I hope I have clarified your doubts.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Yes, I did have acrylic nails a day before I noticed this black line. I removed it by peeling it off because it looked like a soft acrylic nail. So I do not have to do anything about this, will it go away?

Please answer me.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, it will go away on its own. Do not worry, nothing major or serious in your case.

Take care.Thanks and regards.
