What are the common signs of bipolar depression?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I believe that I am suffering from bipolar depression disorder, and it would be helpful if you share more information about this condition. My father was diagnosed with bipolar depression at my age, and I have also been showing certain signs.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You can screen yourself for clinical depression. First, do a self-rating test of depression like Zung's self-rating depression scale, which you can easily find on the internet. Bipolar depression is said to be present if the current episode is of clinical depression and there is a history of another hypomanic or manic episode lasting at least four days or very severe if of lesser duration. Hypomanic or manic symptoms can include feeling high or euphoric, excessive talking, less need for sleep, spending spree, etc. A confirmed diagnosis can only be made after a detailed evaluation. So consult a psychiatrist in person for evaluation. Anyways treatment is possible.

Hope this solves your query. Feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Thank you.
