What are the medications to lower my hCG levels during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am pregnant, and my hCG level at five weeks was 17,000 mIU/mL with only an empty sac, and no fetal pole was observed. My last menstrual cycle was two months ago. I was admitted to the emergency room for brown spotting and mild cramping. During the sixth week, I had nausea and vomiting. What is the reason for my increased hCG level? I have attached my blood test report. I am taking tablet Sertraline 50 mg.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

From the reports attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), your hCG level is high. There is a chance of twins, a baby with Down syndrome, or molar pregnancy. The second sac should be visible after a few weeks in an ultrasound scan.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

Can multiple pregnancy occur with only one sac shown at five weeks? Should I be concerned about Down syndrome?

Answered by Dr. Reetika

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

An ultrasound scan taken during the fifth week is too early to predict. So I suggest an ultrasound scan for confirmatory diagnosis in the sixth or seventh week. Do not worry because earlier management can prevent Down syndrome and molar pregnancy.
