What is the reason for penile head irritation that is peeling and rough to touch?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have penile head irritation. The area does not hurt or itch; however, it is rough when I touch it and is peeling. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. The condition is balanitis. I suggest the below treatment plan. Apply Fucidin (Fusidic Acid) cream at the daytime for seven days. Apply Clotrimazole cream or Miconazole cream at night for ten days. Take Tablet Zifi 200 mg (Cefixime) two times daily after food for five days. Wash the area with Episoft cleanser or no-soap cleanser daily for one month. Maintain proper genital hygiene. Avoid scratching and rubbing lesions. Keep a check on sugar levels. Keep the area clean and dry. Wear loose, comfortable thin cotton innerwear. Avoid moisture, heat, injury, friction, or occlusion. Practice safe sex. Consult a specialist doctor, talk to him or her, and start the medicines with their consent. I suggest you get a urine routine, culture test, HSV 2 IgG or IgM (herpes simplex virus), and VDRL (venereal disease research laboratory test) tests done. Also, follow up after ten days. I hope this helps. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the response. I always practice safe sex. Also, when it comes to hygiene, I shower every day. I must have used shower gel in that area. My main concern is that it could be an STD. Or has it started because of the shower gel?

Hello,

Welcome back to iciniq.com.

The cause can be an infection (fungal, bacterial, or viral) or unprotected sexual intercourse (sexually transmitted infection), or due to contact with an irritant (fragrance containing shower gel). Is there a history of unprotected sex? Is there any tingling sensation or burning during urination? Or is there any itching? Kindly revert with the answers. Thank you.
