Can I take Bactrim for abscess while trying to conceive?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was prescribed Bactrim 800-160 for an abscess in my leg last week. I have taken it for seven days now. I am trying to conceive this month on day 12 of my cycle. My doctor said not to take this during pregnancy, and the physician assistant said at the time it was fine because I was not yet pregnant. However, I see references saying that taking this even 12 weeks before conception can increase the risk of congenital malformations. So I am very nervous and upset and trying to figure out whether I should still try this month to conceive.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. Bactrim has an antifolate property which is why causing neural tube defects in babies so doctors will give you high doses of folic acid during pregnancy. You should not worry about preconceptions, and it will not affect the baby. Take folic acid when trying to conceive.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Should I take a higher dose than 800 mcg, which is what is in my prenatal vitamin?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, it would be best if you started taking a folic acid tablet of 5 mg daily to prevent the antifolate effect of Bactrim. Also, take a high protein diet and lots of vegetables and fruits.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
