What are the ways to prevent avian influenza?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been hearing about avian influenza, which has raised concerns for me. Is it a pandemic or something? What can we do to prevent it?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

Avian influenza, also known as bird flu, refers to influenza viruses that primarily infect birds. While most strains of avian influenza do not infect humans, some, such as the H5N1 and H7N9 subtypes, have caused infections in people, usually through direct contact with infected birds or contaminated environments. Preventing the spread of avian influenza involves several measures, including avoiding contact with infected birds, maintaining proper hygiene, cooking poultry properly, and using protective measures, especially those working in poultry farms or markets, apart from surveillance and early reporting.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
