This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 33 year old male and I have a family. We are all worried about the rise in avian flu. We wanted to know about the precautions to be taken. Does it spread by eating diseased birds? How to know if the meat is spoiled or infected? Should we stop eating animal meat? Can a plant-based diet prevent us from such flu? How long should we follow plant-based diet and is it safe and nutritious for kids? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.I can understand your concern. The following are the precautions taken against Avian flu. Avoid contact with live poultry, birds, and their droppings, especially in areas where avian flu outbreaks have been reported. Stay away from poultry farms, live bird markets, and areas where dead or sick birds are present. Ensure that poultry and eggs are cooked thoroughly.

Wash hands, utensils, and surfaces with soap and water after handling raw poultry and eggs.

Be aware of symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing. Must get physically examined and investigated from doctor in a hospital . - Avian flu is not typically transmitted to humans through properly cooked poultry or eggs. The virus is killed by thorough cooking. Purchase poultry from reputable sources that follow safety inspections. Adopting a plant-based diet can reduce the risk of exposure to avian flu through poultry. A plant-based diet can be safe and nutritious for children if it includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds to ensure adequate intake of essential nutrients. There’s no fixed duration for following a plant-based diet. It can be a long-term lifestyle choice or a temporary precaution during an outbreak. consulting with a doctor or nutritionist is important. Regular hand washing with soap and water is essential, Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
