Can a plant-based diet protect against avian flu?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 30-year-old female, and I am deeply concerned about the recent outbreaks of avian influenza. I have been hearing a lot of alarming news about it, and I am unsure how to protect myself. Could you please explain what avian influenza is and how it is transmitted? I am also curious about whether adopting a plant-based diet could help reduce my risk. I have heard that vegan and vegetarian diets can boost immunity and lower inflammation. However, is there any evidence that they can actually prevent or reduce the severity of avian flu? I am considering switching to a plant-based diet, but I am not sure if it is worth it in terms of protection against avian influenza. What are your thoughts on this?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Although all strains of influenza A virus naturally infect birds, certain strains can infect mammalian hosts such as pigs and humans. The reassortment of an avian strain with a mammalian strain may produce a chimeric virus that is transmissible between mammals; such mutated products may contain hemagglutinin or neuraminidase proteins that are unrecognizable to the immune systems of mammals.

The mainstay of treatment is the administration of antiviral medication. Although it is reported to be safe to consume well-cooked non-vegetarian food, people are increasingly opting to diversify their protein sources beyond the usual choices like chicken and eggs. Additionally, store poultry in a clean space separate from vegetables to avoid any cross-contamination. Also, use a separate chopping board and knife for poultry.

I hope this information helps you, and please reach out if you have any doubts.

Thank you.
