Is Montelukast effective for managing asthma in the elderly?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 64 years old, completely fit, 5 feet 2 inches tall, and weigh 118 pounds. I have a step tracker, so I know my average resting heart rate is 67 beats per minute. I walk an average of 18,000 steps a day, sometimes even more. I golf four times a week and usually walk during my rounds. However, I had asthma as a child, and it seems to have resurfaced. I have been taking Fluticasone for the last three months because the humidity and allergens have been horrific. I occasionally take Diphenhydramine at night and take Naproxen or other forms of Ibuprofen daily.

I have a family history of high blood pressure. Six months ago, my blood pressure was in the range of 110/70 to 120/80 mmHg. However, the other day, I took a reading and it was 141/87 mmHg, which has been consistent for the last several days. I am not sure when this elevation occurred. I never eat fast food or processed food, and I also follow a gluten-free diet.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You have not provided a specific query regarding your health issue. From what I understand, your average pulse rate is around 67 beats per minute, and your blood pressure usually varies from 110/70 to 120/80 mmHg. However, it has been higher recently. This elevation may be related to stress from the resurfacing of your asthma, which I understand is being managed with Fluticasone. There is no need to worry; your blood pressure will stabilize. Please remember to check your blood pressure regularly and continue taking your medication. I recommend taking Montelukast 10 mg, one tablet daily. Avoid painkillers, as they can aggravate asthma. You can continue your regular physical activities, which is beneficial for you. It is advisable to wear a mask when outdoors. I also suggest undergoing the following investigations: a pulmonary function test and an allergy test. Periodic check-ups are recommended.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
