How to manage nocturnal wheezing and chest tightness?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 35 years old and just got my asthma test reports back, and I am not sure what to make of them. My symptoms have been getting worse lately, with more wheezing and chest tightness, especially at night. My current medicines are an Albuterol inhaler and a steroid inhaler.

  1. The doctor also ordered a PFT, and my FEV1 came back lower than before. Should I be worried?
  2. What does a lower FEV1 mean for my asthma control?
  3. Also, I had a blood test for allergies, and it showed high IgE levels. I feel like my medicines are not working as well as they used to. Should I ask for a different inhaler or add a new treatment?
  4. Can I take allergy shots if my IgE is high?

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

If your FEV1 (forced expiratory volume in one second) is less than the previous one, then this is suggestive of poor asthma control.

High IgE (immunoglobulin E) means allergy. So get a skin prick test to find out allergens. I suggest you change or increase the dose of inhalers.

I hope I have solved your query.

I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health.

Thank you.
