Does Haloperidol withdrawal cause anxiety and depression, tardive dyskinesia, or Parkinsonism?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was taking tablet Haloperidol 1.5 mg per day for six months. I have stopped it for 1.5 months. My heartbeat at rest is sometimes 80 to 95. My blood pressure was high at noontime at 130/97. I can not focus; I am tired, dizzy, and unbalanced when standing up. I recently had a heart palpitation, and my upper jaw is sometimes stiff and sore; while I am eating, I also have difficulty swallowing. Sometimes I have difficulty opening my mouth or speaking too. It happened one week already. What causes my jaw stiffness, difficulty swallowing, and open mouth? Is this anxiety and depression, tardive dyskinesia, or parkinsonism side effect of haloperidol? Many thanks in advance.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your query. It looks like you have developed the side effects of the tablet Haloperidol. It looks like you have features of drug-induced Parkinson's and milder side effects of lightheadedness. You need an alternative medication. Kindly revert to your psychiatrist, as I cannot prescribe antipsychotic drugs. I hope it helped.

Thank you.
