Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I and my family would like to get a dog. However, our landlord does not want us to because her son is very allergic to dogs (he gets asthma attacks) and possibly wants to move into the house one day. So, I understand that she does not want to take any risks. Because of that, I would like to know if there are any things we could do while living in the house with a dog and after moving out to get rid of the allergens. We would do anything possible. Also, I wondered how long it takes until the allergens are gone after the dog moves out of the house. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Animal dander can remain inside the house for a long time, even after the animal has gone. It may stick to curtains, carpets, clothes, and furnishings. It may be impossible to completely remove the dander to make it entirely safe for an allergic person to live without issues. You may try asking the landlord if her son is allergic to cat dander or dog dander, and if it is the cat one, you may be able to bring in the dog. Allergy can also be severe, so you had better take adequate care.
While living in the house, you can take certain precautions to keep allergens to a minimum. You could get all carpets, curtains, pillow covers, and furnishings dusted and rinsed in warm water (131 degrees Fahrenheit) after soaking for a few hours. Wearing a mask by the allergy probe person can be helpful.
I hope this helps.
Please revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
