Are long-acting injections safe for hereditary angioedema?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have hereditary angioedema (HAE) and recently experienced throat swelling that almost required an emergency room visit. I do have emergency medication, but I would like to know if there are better ways to prevent future attacks. Are there any new long-acting injections available for this condition? Also, is it safe to travel with HAE? I am especially anxious about flying due to the risk of flare-ups.

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) can indeed be life-threatening, particularly when it affects the airway, so it is essential to always have emergency medication, such as Icatibant or a C1 inhibitor, readily available. Fortunately, there are now effective long-term preventive options. Newer long-acting treatments like Lanadelumab and Berotralstat have been approved for preventing HAE attacks and have significantly reduced the frequency and severity of episodes for many individuals. These therapies are generally well tolerated, and it is important to consult with an immunologist or allergist to determine if they are appropriate for your specific case.

When it comes to travel, especially flying, it is possible to do so safely with HAE, provided proper preparation is in place. This includes carrying emergency medications and extra doses in your carry-on, having a letter from your doctor detailing your condition and treatment, staying hydrated, managing stress, avoiding known triggers, and informing the airline crew discreetly in case of an emergency. Feeling anxious after a severe episode is completely understandable, but with a well-prepared treatment plan, HAE should not prevent you from living fully, including traveling. If needed, assistance can be provided to help create a travel safety checklist or a long-term management plan.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
