Can Rogaine cause severe hair fall?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old, and I have been suffering from severe hair fall for the past two to three months. First, my hair was perfectly fine; then, I used Rogaine after my dermatologist suggested it. It has been a year now, and from that time, I have noticed that only thirty percent of my scalp has hair growth; in the remaining seventy percent, there is no hair growth. The hair loss is on the top of my hair, more apparent when I stop using the medicines.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I suspect you have androgenetic alopecia. It is essential to continue with the medications to save the hair. Once you stop the treatment, the hair fall starts again. Rogaine (Minoxidil) is a good treatment. But I suggest Minoxidil 5 % with Finasteride 0.1 % topical solution as it works even better. Please remember whatever medications you are using have to be continued to prevent hair loss.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

But my hair was perfectly fine before; it started shedding only after stopping Rogaine two months back. So I thought maybe it was anagen or telogen effluvium, but it should begin to show signs of regrowth by now.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Why did you start the lotion exactly? Sometimes, the shedding may happen after stopping Minoxidil, which will recover later. I suggest an alternate option is Redensyl (Dihydroquercetin-glucoside) hair lotion.
