Is Clindamycin a safe option in cases of Penicillin allergy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a bad tooth and needed it to be removed when it showed signs of infection. The dentist provided me with Clindamycin as I am allergic to Penicillin and Amoxicillin, and they both induce anaphylaxis every time I try to take them.

So I wanted to be sure that the Clindamycin was fine?

I am really nervous when it comes to taking antibiotics.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Usually, in Penicillin-allergic patients, Clindamycin can be given. But, still, if you want to make sure that you do not have an allergy to that as well, you can get an allergy test done for different antibiotics to be certain and find out which ones are safe for you.

Hope I have solved your query.

I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
