Is a stem cell transplant recommended for amyloidosis?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My colleague's father is over 70 years old and has been diagnosed with amyloidosis. The doctors suggested a stem cell transplant as a possible treatment, but we were a bit confused because we thought stem cell transplants were mainly for cancer. Could you explain how amyloidosis works and why a stem cell transplant might be recommended? Given his age and the seriousness of the condition, should my colleague consider getting a second opinion before proceeding with such an intense treatment?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Amyloidosis involves the buildup of abnormal protein deposits, called amyloids, in tissues and organs. This can lead to severe organ dysfunction. The most common type of amyloidosis that might be treated with a stem cell transplant is primary amyloidosis. In this type, the bone marrow produces abnormal plasma cells that create amyloid proteins. The procedure aims to eliminate these abnormal cells and allow the bone marrow to produce normal plasma cells. Given that your colleague’s father is well above 70, it is essential to weigh the benefits and risks carefully:
- The patient’s overall health and ability to tolerate high-dose chemotherapy and stem cell transplantation are crucial.
- Pre-existing conditions, particularly those affecting the heart, kidneys, or liver, must be carefully evaluated.
- Older patients have higher risks of complications.
- Must get physically examined by a doctor.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
