Does amniocentesis in the 12th week of gestation cause miscarriage?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am in my 12th week of gestation. NT test shows nasal bone is present. The doctor is saying that there is a risk of Down's syndrome. This is an IVF pregnancy. What is the risk of miscarriage with amniocentesis? What can be my alternative?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Nuchal translucency is normal. Family history, mother's age, and serum markers also count to calculate the combined risk. This is IVF (in vitro fertilization) pregnancy. Your age is also a risk factor for congenital anomalies because, at above 35 years of age, the chances of congenital anomalies increase. Amniocentesis risk for miscarriage is 0.5 to 1 % if done after 15 weeks of gestation. I suggest you do an anomaly scan at 20 weeks to check anomalies. Also, check the heart outflow tract at 22 weeks. It is important to consult your doctor.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
