What are the health benefits of Moringa and Amaranth leaves?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently saw a TV show about superfoods and they mentioned Moringa and Amaranth. They sound incredibly healthy and I have sources to get them easily. However, I had open heart surgery a few years back and I am currently taking blood thinners. My doctor previously warned me to be cautious with leafy vegetables because they can affect my medication. Given my situation, can I include Moringa and Amaranth leaves in my diet? I have heard they are packed with nutrients, supposed to be good for overall health. However, I am concerned about any potential interactions with my blood thinners. Could you provide some guidance?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Including Moringa and Amaranth leaves in your diet while on blood thinners requires careful consideration due to their high nutrient content, particularly vitamin K, which can interfere with blood-thinning medications like Warfarin. Moringa leaves are rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. They are also high in vitamin K, which is known to play a role in blood clotting. High vitamin K intake can counteract the effects of blood thinners, making it essential to monitor and regulate your vitamin K consumption.

Amaranth leaves are also nutritious and contain significant amounts of vitamin K. The vitamin K content can affect the efficacy of blood thinners. I suggest you consult a nutritionist to ensure that you consume them consistently in your diet to avoid fluctuations in vitamin K levels. Even if approved, I suggest you consume these leaves in moderation.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.
