Can memory loss, confusion and mood swings be due to pseudodementia or Alzheimer's disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My grandfather, who is in his sixties, shows symptoms of Alzheimer's disease such as memory loss, mood swings, and confusion. But I find some evidence to be this is pseudodementia because the episodes are likely to correlate with periods when he is less social. So is it possible to determine if his symptoms are neurological or psychological? Kindly help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. Neurologists do various clinical tests and observations, and the doubts can be really to diagnose dementia due to Alzheimer's disease. It may be worthwhile taking him to a neurologist to clarify this problem. To accurately diagnose, we might need further investigations like an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan of the brain.

Thank you.
