What causes physical weakness in alcohol addicts?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been an alcohol addict for 8 years. Without alcohol, I shiver and cannot be normal until I am hospitalized. Presently, I am very weak and need support (lathi) to walk. My urine is brown. I need an opinion.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Well, the report of chest x-ray (attachment removed to protect patient identity) shows that you have fluid or water over both sides of the lungs. If this weakness is new and not chronic, I am afraid you have some active infection or maybe a viral infection like COVID-19. However, if you have this weakness and shortness or breath for many months, then you might have developed an enlarged heart due to alcohol consumption called alcohol related cardiomyopathy.

I suggest you provide more information about this weakness. Is it something that you do not have the power to stand or walk, or is it because you get breathless when you start walking and just stop doing things?

In opposed to the above possibilities, a long-term intake of alcohol can affect the liver and could lead to nearly similar symptoms that you have mentioned. Once I have sufficient information, I can properly help you.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
