Are herbal supplements safe for my husband for regular use?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My husband used to take Himalaya products all the time, but now I wonder if it is fine to keep using them. He took some herbal medicine before, and I read something about hepatotoxicity, which means it is bad for the liver. I am worried because he never really checks with a doctor before trying new things.

  • Are there any risks, like if he takes too much or something?
  • Does Ashwagandha have any side effects on the liver?
  • I think they said it is a dietary supplement, but is it safe to use long-term?
  • Can herbal medicines be bad like real medicines sometimes?
  • Should we get his liver checked or something?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Like any medication herbal or pharmaceutical, there are potential risks, especially if taken in excess or without proper guidance. Herbal medicines, including Ashwagandha, are generally considered safe when used appropriately and for short periods.

Ashwagandha is used for stress relief, improving energy levels, and supporting overall health. Excessive or prolonged use could lead to side effects. Regarding hepatotoxicity, which is liver damage, there have been rare cases where the overuse of certain herbal supplements has been linked to liver problems. Other herbal products in the Himalaya range might have ingredients that, in rare cases, have been linked to liver toxicity. Excessive intake of products that include herbs like kava or comfrey has harmful effects on the liver.

They could cause harm if taken incorrectly, in high doses, or without a doctor’s supervision. These products can strain the liver if used over long periods or in combination with alcohol. Checking his liver function with a blood test is a must. A physical examination by a doctor in a hospital is a must.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
