How to manage cystic breakouts on the chin, lip, and forehead caused by Bupropion?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been on Wellbutrin for a month now. It caused me to break out with cysts on my chin, lip, and forehead. I just stopped taking it 24 hours back. I was just wondering how long it would take for the cysts to clear up. Before taking anti-depressants, I had little to no pimples. I have been very self-conscious about my skin, and it is making me feel sad and judged. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

We will pay close attention to your worries and address all your questions with utmost care.

Pimple is somewhat due to hormonal issues and can also occur if one has oily skin. I suggest you do the following:

1. Do not use hair oil or any sticky cream on the face.

2. Avoid oily foods, chocolates, and milk products.

3. Avoid dust, and use sunscreen [above 30 SPF (sun protection factor)].

4. Do not rub any cream that you use on your face.

5. Do not use any steroid creams.

6. Continue treatment for at least one month.

7. Facewash or soap is not the ideal treatment option and should not be used fully.

8. Do not touch the acne and avoid pressing it.

For treatment, I suggest you do the following:

  1. Clindamycin (Clintop, Faceclin, Clear gel) - This is preventive and curative, so I suggest my patients use it all over the face in the morning.
  2. Adapalene gel (Adalene, Differin) - I suggest you apply it over the acne at night.
  3. Take the tablet Doxycycline (Doxy) 100 mg once a day.

I hope you had a pleasant experience at icliniq.

Thank you.
