Can climate change cause pimples?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing acne breakouts, as well as having pimple marks and enlarged pores. In the next five months, I have my wedding scheduled, and I am seeking recommendations for creams and tablets that can help lighten the scars within this timeframe. I have noticed that my pimples tend to appear whenever there is climate change. Even when following a balanced diet, I still experience breakouts. In the past, I have tried medications like Benzoyl peroxide, Nadibact, and Cleargel. I am also currently using the medicine. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

From the description, the acne you suffer from can be cystic or hormonal acne.

Pimples can be partially attributed to hormonal factors and oily skin.

Here are some recommendations:

  1. Avoid using hair oil and any sticky creams on your face.

  2. Steer clear of oily foods, chocolate, and dairy products.

  3. Protect your skin from dust and use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

  4. Avoid rubbing any creams onto your face.

  5. Refrain from using steroid creams.

  6. Continue treatment for at least one month.

  7. Face washes, and soaps are not considered treatments and may not be very useful.

  8. Avoid touching your acne and resist the urge to squeeze or pop them.

For treatment, you can try the following:

  1. Clindamycin: It is available in both cream and gel form. This is both preventive and curative. Apply it all over your face in the morning.

  2. Adapalene gel: Apply this gel specifically on the acne at night.

  3. Consider taking an antibiotic like tablet Doxycycline 100mg once a day for three months.

Try this treatment regimen for three months, and then provide me with an update on the results.

Regarding post-acne scars, there are three types: box scars, icepick scars (pinpoint scars), and rolling scars. Pinpoint scars are challenging to treat, while box scars are relatively easier.

Here are some options for scar treatment:

  1. Creams or tablets cannot effectively treat scars.

  2. CO2 (carbon dioxide) fractional laser combined with subcision (a surgical procedure to treat depressed scars) is the best technique, requiring five to six sessions for optimal results.

  3. Dermaroller combined with subcision is another method, but it is less effective than the technique as mentioned above.

  4. Fillers can provide a temporary hiding effect by filling in the pits and giving the appearance of fullness, but they are not a permanent solution.

  5. Chemical peels may be effective if the scars are not very prominent.

These are the techniques you can explore for scar treatment. All procedures require four to six sessions and take approximately five to six months to yield better results.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
