Is surgery required for an ACL tissue?

Hello doctor,

I met with an accident after which the ACL ligament of my right leg is completely ruptured. Does it need any surgery?

1. Is your MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) done?

2. Does it show other injuries like the involvement of the meniscus or articulate cartilage?

3. What is your degree of functional disability?

4. Are you severely affected because of the injury?

5. Do you have intense pain or laxity in the corresponding joint?

As you are quite young, any surgery may lead to injury to your growth plate. Postponing surgery is also not advised as there can be damage to the joint. Surgery is done by autografts or allografts. Even if you have a complete tear, still with normal joint function and no laxity during low-demand sports, you can go for non-surgical treatment like a knee brace or physiotherapy. You should go for sports like football or running. Once you attain skeletal maturity, surgery can be planned.
