Can long term acid reflux lead to esophageal cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I get acid reflux almost every day after lunch and dinner. I do not consume alcohol or smoke. I always have a burning sensation in that region. Will this lead to esophageal cancer in the long run?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

By your history and description, the possibility of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) is more likely. I suggest you take Pantoprazole and Levosulpiride combination twice a day before food. Also take Mucaine gel (Oxetacaine, Aluminium Hydroxide, and Milk Of Magnesia) syrup two teaspoons thrice daily after food. Consult your specialist doctor, talk with them, and take the medicines with their consent.

Yes, in the long run, untreated GERD can cause esophageal and gastric cancer. If possible, get an upper GI (gastrointestinal) endoscopy done.

I will be happy to help you further. Wish you good health.

Thanks.
