Bronchitis and Its Home Remedies

Introduction:

The lower respiratory tract is composed of the lungs and trachea. The function of the trachea or windpipe is to carry air. The part of the trachea that enters the lungs is known as the bronchi. At the level of the fourth thoracic vertebrae or sternal angle (the portion where the second rib joins with the sternum), the trachea is divided into two parts and forms the bronchi. Each bronchus enters the respective side of the lungs and is known as the primary bronchi. The primary bronchus is again subdivided into secondary lobar bronchi. Secondary lobar bronchi are again subdivided into several tertiary segmental bronchi. The infection of inflammation of the bronchi is known as bronchitis.

What Is Bronchitis?

Bronchitis is one of the most common respiratory disorders. Around 5 percent of the adult population in the world suffers from inflammation of either the bronchial lining or bronchial tube. Acute bronchitis is mainly caused by the inflammation of the bronchial lining. This is a self-limiting inflammation of the mid or large-sized airway. In most cases, it is caused by bacterial or viral infections. Virus-like influenza viruses, adenovirus, and rhinovirus are commonly involved in most cases. Apart from this, bacteria like Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydia pneumoniae, and Bordetella pertussis are commonly involved. Such types of infections are most common in winter seasons. On the other hand, chronic bronchitis is related to exposure to pollen, allergens, smoke, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. All these factors lead to the secretion of inflammatory mediators and the activation of immune cells. As a result, the production of free radicals causes injury to the lung tissues. The symptoms of bronchitis are;

  1. Cough and production of mucosa.

  2. Respiratory difficulties.

  3. Wheezing sound during respiration.

What Are the Home Remedies for Bronchitis?

Home remedies are simple methods to combat such complications. Though these are not part of the traditional treatment options, they help combat symptoms. Above all, these methods reduce the rate of hospitalization. The home remedies for bronchitis are;

Ginger:

Ginger is full of medicinal ingredients. There are almost 115 compounds present in ginger, which have potential health benefits. These compounds are gingerols, shogaols, and parasols. Gingerols are different types of polyphenols, such as 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 10-gingerol. After storage or after application, these polyphenols will be converted to gingerols and can be transformed into corresponding shogaols. Due to hydration, shogaols are transformed into parasols. For home remedies, ginger can be consumed in different forms, such as crystalized, dried, and raw ginger. Also, raw ginger can be added to hot water. Nowadays, ginger capsules are available for health benefits.

Bronchitis is responsible for generating free radicals that can cause harm to the lungs, respiratory tract, and body. Ginger can prevent the formation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species. Dried ginger has the highest antioxidant effects. The chemicals present in ginger also have anti-inflammatory effects. These chemicals block inflammatory pathways, prevent prostaglandin production, and increase the production of interleukin and tumor necrosis factor-alpha. Ginger also has antimicrobial activity that causes the killing of respiratory bacteria like Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus aureus.

Garlic:

Garlic is popular for its medicinal benefits. It has been considered one of the best medicines for lung infection for ages. The principal bioactive product of garlic is allicin. Other compounds with medicinal benefits present in garlic are organic sulfides, saponins, phenolic compounds, and polysaccharides. Garlic can be consumed as fresh garlic or in the form of aged garlic extract. In aged garlic extract, sliced raw garlic is stored in 15 to 20 percent ethanol for more than one and a half years. Garlic oil can be used for health benefits because it contains diallyl, allyl methyl, and dimethyl mono hexa sulfides. Due to the presence of phenolic compounds, garlic has antioxidant properties. These help to prevent the formation of free radicals and reactive oxygen species produced in lung infections. Garlic boosts the functionality of the immune cells and boosts immunity. As a result, garlic is beneficial in preventing lung infections. Garlic has anti-inflammatory effects as it prevents the formation of inflammatory mediators, C-reactive protein, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha.

Turmeric:

Turmeric has been known for its health benefits for thousands of years. It is one of the most commonly used therapeutic spices mentioned in Ayurveda. Naturally obtained polyphenol curcumin is the most abundant compound in turmeric. Turmeric can be added in several forms. One can chew raw turmeric or add pieces of raw turmeric to salads. Turmeric can be added to hot milk or hot water, and powdered or fresh turmeric can be added to tea. The antioxidant functionality of turmeric is attributed to the presence of antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase and inhibiting enzymes producing reactive oxygen species. Thus, it helps prevent lung damage caused by respiratory pathogens. The anti-inflammatory action of turmeric is facilitated by the function of preventing the formation of inflammatory mediators.

Hot Water:

Hot water is one of the most common home remedies for preventing bronchitis. Hot water baths and steam therapy are beneficial. Salt can be added to hot water for gargling. This can reduce complications of the upper respiratory tract due to bronchitis. Also, the amount of cough production and the production of mucus secretion from the upper respiratory tract is reduced by this action. Honey and lemon can be added to hot water for more beneficial effects. The anti-microbial action of the honey can kill pathogens. Also, other herbs like tulsi, ginger, and garlic can be added with hot water for more benefits.

Thyme:

Tyme has been used for respiratory tract infections for centuries. It is well known for its medicinal value. Thymol is the major chemical phenolic product obtained from this plant that has therapeutic benefits. Another important molecule present in thyme is carvacrol. Both of these molecules have anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, and antioxidant effects. These molecules also have anti-cancer effects. Borneol, another therapeutic molecule present in the thyme, can be helpful for persons suffering from bronchitis. It helps to improve blood circulation, gives relief from nasal congestion, and improves symptoms of bronchitis. Also, these molecules help to boost immunity. Oil of thyme can be used for home remedies.

Inflammation of bronchi is known as bronchitis. Such inflammation is commonly caused by infections from viruses and bacteria. Home remedies reduce the rate of hospitalization and reduce the severity of the disease. The use of herbs like ginger, garlic, thyme, and turmeric can be beneficial in such cases.
