Oxalate, also known as oxalic acid, is a naturally occurring substance found in plenty in plants and humans. It's not an essential nutrient for people, and too much of it can lead to kidney stones. Oxalate acts by getting rid of extra calcium in plants by binding with it. That is why maximum high-oxalate foods are plant-derived. High oxalate levels can be found in tea, green leafy vegetables, raspberries, dates, and potatoes. Excess amounts of oxalate may bind to minerals like calcium in the gut and prevent the body from properly absorbing other nutrients in the digestive tract.

Iced tea nephropathy is a type of oxalate nephropathy which is characterized by an acute or chronic decline in kidney function linked to the calcium oxalate crystals accumulation in the kidney tubules.   • Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) - The doctor can determine the glomerular filtration rate of the kidneys by estimating the level of creatinine in a blood sample. Poor renal function is indicated by a low filtration rate.

  • Imaging Test - To determine the shape and size of the kidneys, the doctor may use ultrasound and x-rays.   • Dialysis: Waste materials and extra water are taken out of the blood during this treatment.

  • Transplant: Sometimes, the best course of action is a kidney transplant. Tests are used to decide who is a good candidate for transplant surgery.

  • Symptom Management: Depending on the person's current health conditions, all symptoms are treated.

  • Treatment of Underlying Conditions: Conditions leading to dehydration should also be recognized and treated with the proper medications. Among them could be over-the-counter medications.

  • Surgical Removal- Excessively large and painful oxalate stones may need to be removed surgically.

  • Instead of iced tea, consume milk tea as milk balances the oxalates present in the tea.

  • Consume less amount of iced tea or black tea.

  • Reduces the amount of oxalate consumption found in other food items like green leafy vegetables, potatoes, and dates.

  • Drink plenty of water.
