Mental health promotion reduces the risk factors that can lead to a mental health issue. These also promote healthy behaviors and protective factors that prevent the onset of a mental disorder. It helps create living conditions that promote mental health and a healthy lifestyle.

Mental health promotion programs include:

  • Community development programs.

  • Early childhood intervention programs.

  • Violence prevention programs.

  • Mental health promotion activities in schools.

  • Child support programs like skill-building programs.

  • Programs targeted to a particular group like migrants, vulnerable groups, minorities, and people affected by disasters (psychosocial intervention measures following a disaster).

The key strategies for mental health promotion include:

  • Raising Awareness - The first step is promoting the importance of mental health by raising awareness. Public discussions and education campaigns aid in reducing the stigma associated with mental health issues. This makes it easier for an individual to seek help.

  • Management of Stress - The link between stress and psychiatric illness is more than the link between stress and other medical illnesses. Among the different psychiatric illnesses, the association of stress with neurosis is the greatest, and that with schizophrenia is the lowest. Stress is an important trigger factor for mental health disorders. So, managing stress with coping strategies promotes mental health and well-being.

  • Building Resilience - Resilience means bouncing back. It is not resisting changes; it means being flexible and adapting. It is to adapt well when exposed to trauma, tragedy, adversity, or stresses, including career, family, and financial stresses. Resilience training is a structured and planned activity that helps improve one’s ability to bounce back from turbulent times. It helps develop a positive mindset by focusing on what can be changed and modified in a challenging situation.

  • Physical Health Promotion - As the body and mind are interconnected, promoting physical health through regular exercise, a healthy diet, and adequate sleep will positively impact mental health.

  • Education Programs - Comprehensive mental health education programs in workplaces and schools aid in recognizing the signs of mental health disorders.

  • Social Relationships - Becoming socially isolated may lead to mental health issues. Nurturing relationships and promoting social relations reduce the risk of mental health issues.

  • Work-Life Balance - A healthy work-life balance helps reduce stress and promote mental well-being.

The three levels of prevention are:

  • Primary Prevention: Stopping mental health issues before they start.

  • Secondary Prevention: Providing support to those at higher risk of developing a mental health issue.

  • Tertiary Prevention: Providing support to those with mental health issues.

What Are the Different Interventions for Implementing Mental Health Promotion and Prevention Strategies?

Infant and Maternal Mental Health Promotion:

Interventions Include:

  • Parenting interventions promote mother-child interactions.

  • Home-visit parenting programs.

  • Antenatal screening and prevention intervention for women who are at increased risk for depression.

  • Pre and postnatal care services.

  • Nutrition supplements, along with psychosocial stimulation, are recommended for children belonging to disadvantaged communities( with stunted growth).

Promotion of Early Child Mental Health:

Interventions Include:

  • Early childhood enrichment programs help improve a child’s emotional and social well-being, behavioral problems, and cognitive skills.

  • Pre-school programs.

  • Programs for school-going children (3 to 16 years of age).

  • Parenting and family strengthening programs.

  • Emotional and social learning interventions in primary and post-primary schools.

  • Interventions employing a whole-school approach are more effective.

  • Targeted classroom-based interventions for vulnerable children. These vulnerable groups include children living in areas of conflict or those orphaned by HIV (human immunodeficiency virus). Estimates show that the prevalence of mental disorders in children living in areas of war is higher.

  • Classroom-based interventions are conducted to build resilience and reduce distress.

What Are the Preventive Measures One Can Take To Help Themselves?

The preventive measures that can be taken to stay mentally healthy are:

A healthy lifestyle that includes good sleep, a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding alcohol and drugs, etc., can make one feel better and improve overall well-being.

  • Taking measures to reduce loneliness for the elderly.

  • Caring for those with suicidal thoughts.
