Does sun exposure cause a darker skin tone?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a fair and oily skin type. When I go out in the sun, my skin immediately gets black and my lips were pink when I was born but they have been getting black since my school days. What should I use to remove blackness permanently without using laser treatment? What should I use for my skin on a daily basis to make it fair, spotless, and oil-free? Also, suggest something for my lips and dark circles. I have got treatment previously but it did not work for me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern. Skin pigmentation is a side effect of excessive sunlight exposure. Indian skin is very prone to get tan. I suggest you few treatments and precautions to be followed:

1. Avoid direct sunlight exposure as much as you can. Wear sunglasses or caps and cover the exposed part of the body all the time.

2. Use sunscreen thrice a day at 10 AM, 12 PM, and 3 PM all over the face.

3. Sunscreen SPF (sun protection factor) should be around 50.

4. Use anti-pigmentation cream over pigmented parts like Kojic acid (4H-pyran, tyrosinase), Hydroquinone (Benzenediol), or Depiwhite (Hydroquinone, Kojic acid) creams.

5. If tanning is deep and too much then the ideal treatment is glycolic acid peels which can take six to eight sittings.

6. Never stop sunscreen even if tanning goes off.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
