Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am in PrEP on demand. This week, I took the protocol as indicated (two initial doses, one dose the next day, and two more every day for 48 hours after sex). In the sexual relationship, the condom was broken, and I did not realize it. I am nervous even though I fulfilled the protocol. Should I start PEP as an additional measure? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you for stopping by!

I am here to provide expert opinion on your medical issues.

The chances of transmission of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) through single unprotected intercourse are low. Condom breakage can be considered almost as unprotected intercourse, though the risk in your scenario is very low. On-demand PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is quite effective, though not 100 percent effective in the prevention of HIV transmission. If the doses of PrEP have been taken as per protocol, the risk of transmission of HIV is almost nil. If the person is HIV-negative, for sure, there is no need for PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis). There may not be a need for PEP with the given details. You can consult your doctor for further risk assessment and the need for PEP.

I hope this information will help you. In case of further queries, please revert.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

To be honest, I do not know the HIV status of the person. I was worried because although there was only one event, he ejaculated inside me but I took PrEP on demand in line with protocol before and after. When is the ideal time to have the HIV test (4th generation) done?

Thank you.

Hi

Glad to have you back!

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

Please go for the HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) antibodies 4th generation test as baseline now and 90 days after the last exposure. You can also consult your doctor for further risk assessment and management.

I hope this information will help you. In case of further queries, please revert.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
