Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 22 years old and highly sexually active. I am worried about getting some kind of sexually transmitted infection, specifically syphilis. Is this condition treatable? I have heard people die from it. What is syphilis and how does it spread? Are there vaccines for it like the HPV vaccine? Are there any tests I should get done? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is good that you are taking your sexual health seriously and asking questions about STIs (sexually transmitted infections) like syphilis. Syphilis is caused by bacteria and can be treated, especially if caught early. It spreads through direct contact with a sore during sex or from an infected mother to her baby during pregnancy. In the early stages, you might notice painless sores or a rash. Without treatment, it can lead to serious problems. Syphilis can be treated with antibiotics, mainly Penicillin, but it is most effective early on. Unfortunately, there is no vaccine for it like there is for HPV (human papillomavirus).

It is important to get tested regularly for syphilis and other STIs like HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), chlamydia, gonorrhea, and hepatitis. Regular testing, using condoms correctly, and talking openly with your partners can help keep you healthy and lower your chances of getting syphilis or other STIs.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
