Bipolar disorder also called bipolar disease or manic depression is a mental illness causing extreme mood changes. There are three types of bipolar disorders, namely bipolar I, bipolar II, and cyclothymia. A person who has bipolar disorder is seen to have periods of extremely elevated mood (mania) and episodes of depression. During the mania period, the person feels excited, euphoric, energetic, and impulsive. They might go on a spending spree, have unprotected sex, and might use drugs. And during the depressed period, the person feels sad, angry, hopeless, tired, and gets suicidal thoughts. Your genes, abnormalities in the brain structure, extreme stress, illness, and mental trauma play a role in causing this disease. The medications used to treat bipolar disorder are Lithium, Olanzapine, Fluoxetine, and Alprazolam. Other treatment options include psychotherapy, acupuncture, lifestyle changes, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
